Girls' World—Scream Quietly or the Neighbours Will Hear

In 1971, Erin Pizzey, who set up the first domestic violence shelter in the UK, wrote Scream Quietly or the Neighbours Will Hear, a book documenting the experiences of battered women. Domestic violence is nowadays defined as any incident, or pattern of incidents, of controlling, coercive, threatening behaviour, violence or abuse between those aged 16 or over who are, or have been, intimate partners or family members regardless of gender or sexuality. The abuse can encompass, but is not limited to psychological, physical, sexual, financial and emotional. Research shows that domestic violence can be reciprocal, and that women are as equally capable of violence as men, but that it is a deeply cultural and gendered issue which disproportionately affects women and children.

Psychological and emotional abuse is any act including confinement, isolation, verbal assault, humiliation, intimidation, infantilization, or any other treatment which may diminish the sense of identity, dignity and self-worth. Common signs of psychological abuse are depression, low self-esteem, suicidal thoughts and anxiety. It causes serious behavioural, cognitive, emotional or mental disorder. It can cause Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Often it occurs in the family and the vast majority of victims of this kind of violence are women and children.
