The United Nations refers to domestic violence during Covid-19 as the Shadow Pandemic stating that “Early data shows that helplines in Singapore and Cyprus have registered a more than 30 per cent increase in calls. In Australia, 40 per cent of frontline workers in New South Wales reported more requests for help with violence. In France, domestic violence cases increased by 30 per cent since the lockdown on March 17. In Argentina, emergency calls for domestic violence have increased by 25 per cent since the lockdown on March 20. In the United Kingdom, calls, emails and website visits to Respect, the national domestic violence charity, have increased 97 per cent, 185 per cent and 581 per cent respectively. In the first 3 weeks of COVID-19 lockdowns, 14 women and 2 children were murdered in the country.” (12 June 2020) Domestic abuse is not going away but you can do something to help. The Socially Engaged Art Salon (SEAS) in Brighton (www.seasbrighton.org) is launching an open call to creative people from all disciplines, across the globe, to design a poster to raise awareness of domestic abuse. Eight of the winning poster designs will be printed on A0 size posters and exhibited in the windows of Jubilee Library in Brighton, UK during January 2021 and at the lobby of the Black and Minorities Ethnic Community Partnership (BMECP) centre. This competition is free to enter. In addition
The posters will be part of a larger online and on-site exhibition. For this exhibition, we are looking now also for male-identifying artists that have experienced abuse to submit work that tackles the issues faced by people in these situations. The work can be in any medium and in particular we seek narrative or documentary illustration work, photography/video/film. Two chosen artists will receive £50 honorarium and a page with their info on the exhibition website. DEADLINE: 10/12/2020
The winning entries will be selected by a panel of judges, including:
· Barry Adamson, a multi-disciplined artist—musician, composer, writer, photographer, filmmaker—living between Brighton and London.
· Christine Webster, an international photo/video artist, lecturer, and psychotherapist who frequently works with women who have experienced domestic abuse.
· A representative from a local domestic abuse charity/organisation.
· Dr. Gil Mualem-Doron, artist and SEAS’s from the Socially Engaged Arts Salon, Brighton. (tbc) Deadline for submissions 10/12/2020
Winners will be informed by 15/12/2020 For the poster competition – please submit up to 4 graphic design / photo-collage works. For the call for male artists – please submit up to 4 works in any 2D medium including painting, photography, graphic design, drawing, as well as sound work and film. Specifications and notes
